Bad year for the BCS

This year could possibly be the definition of the worst nightmare for the BCS. The first seven teams are without a loss and seven additional teams only having a single loss. This will just continue to fuel the fire for those who are pushing for a post season playoff.

There is absolutely no way, on paper, to determine which two teams are the worthy of playing for that coveted crystal ball in January. The answer would be an eight team playoff to settle all discrepancys that currently arise.

With an eight team playoff system, everthing can be settled and bowl games can still happen. Which means the universitys can still receive humonguous revenue as they always do by making a bowl and everyone will remain happy.

Less scrutiny, everyone gets paid and we will have an outright champion. The key is getting everyone to by in to this idea, but that will be the most difficult aspect. Good luck NCAA committee, we all hope you come to the light.

Leave Early or Stay Late?

Sam Bradford. The second collegiate football player to win the Heisman Trophy as a Sophomore. Likely a early first rounder in the '09 draft, decides to return to OU for his Junior campaign. Bradford is twenty one years old and has millions of dollars in endorsements and signing bonuses staring him in the face. Yet he opts to return to Norman for the right reason, he enjoys the college life and wants another crack at the BCS Championship and another Big Twelve title.

Flash forward to September 5th, 2009. Bradford fires an 18 yard completion to set the all time passing record by a Sooner, but is buried on the play by a BYU defender. A sprained AC joint in the shoulder is the diagnoses and Bradford will go on to miss the next three games before returning to torch Baylor for nearly 400 yards through the air.

The following week in the Red River Rivalry, Bradford reaggravates the injury and is once again lost for the game. Yet again the Sooners are without their star quarterback and his return is uncertain. Head Coach Bob Stoops already made it clear that Bradford would not be available for this weeks matchup with the 25th ranked Kansas Jayhawks.

So now the question is, did Sam Bradford make the wrong decision by foregoing the NFL Draft and returning for another season? Millions of dollars may have been lost if Bradford is unable to return to original form. Scouts have seen what he can do on the field, but will his durability be in question?

Sam Bradford made the correct decision. He returned to school for a simple reason. He wasn't in a rush to get all the attention of the first pick in the draft. I doubt his stock will take too big of a hit because of the injury, mainly because I think he was rushed back in preparation for the matchup against Texas. More guys should follow Bradford's lead and stay that extra year, because if you're the real deal it won't matter.

Should the Rams start fresh with Rush?

I expect by now that many of you know that radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts have placed a bid to buy the St. Louis Rams. This has become a largely controversial within the NFL and is now spreading throughout the nation.

Things must be serious when Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson team up and oppose Limbaugh's potential ownership of the NFL franchise. Jackson recently sent a letter to the NFL voicing his displeasure. Jackson claimed that owning an NFL franchise was a privilege and that the conservative talk show host may have lost this privilege with some of his comments over the radio waves.

In 2003, Limbaugh had a short stint as a pregame analyst on an ESPN pregame show but resigned after saying that "Donovan McNabb was overrated and that the media just wanted to see a black quarterback succeed." It's evident that Limbaugh has a big mouth but that doesn't mean he is a racist or has an issue with African Americans.

I personally have no problem with Limbaugh owning the Rams. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are just trying to blow something small out of proportion to stir things up. If Limbaugh and crew are able to turn the Rams around I doubt there will be anything else said on the topic.

Lets not forget that it's still baseball season

It's still baseball season folks. I am tired of bringing up baseball and people just say, It's football season now, not baseball season. I know that you love football more than any other sport and once the season comes around nothing else matters, but don't forget about the baseball post-season. It can be just as exciting as anything you'll see on the gridiron.

Today's American League Central Division tie breaking game is a quintessential example of the excitement of the baseball post-season. The final regular season game to be played in the Metrodome was one that will be remembered by Twins faithful for years to come. I could feel the electricity as the game entered extra innings.

So next time when one of your buddies brings up the baseball post-season, give it a chance. If you're willing to keep an open mind about it, you'll enjoy it. Trust me, I'm a Doctor.

From the Top to Bottom

So it's no secret that I am extremely passionate about Florida State football. I had been trying to stay away from topics involving the Seminoles, because I didn't want this blog to have bias. But today I was thinking about the recent loss to Boston College and I couldn't help but wonder how the 'Noles had fallen from their 90's dominance. Then I thought of how all teams go through a down period at some point, and it can be for a number of different reasons but realistically it should not happen.

If a team has success, then they can recruit the best players so they are able to continue the successful run. So how can a team possibly fall out of national contention with this cycle? There are a number of scenarios but what it really comes down is to recruiting.

If you cannot get top flight prospects, you start to fall off. If you can't coach the top talent then once again you are falling off. If you don't win, then you don't get the top recruits which leads to even more losses.

The moral of the story is that, all three of these things are needed to stay on top and if one starts to tail off, then it can affect the others. So don't let it happen.

Who's the Man? Heisman that is.

This season, the Heisman trophy was supposed to be one of three elite quarterbacks. Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, and Colt McCoy. It's hard to argue with that statement due to the fact that Bradford and Tebow had already received the prestigious award and many thought McCoy was just as worthy last season.

The problem is, Bradford and Tebow have both sustained severe injuries which may be a major setback in their pursuit for the Heisman. While McCoy has looked less than stellar throwing five interceptions in the first four games of the season. McCoy threw eight interceptions through the entire 2008 campaign. So the question is, who will it be that bursts into the Heisman race next?

Could it be a quarterback from a smaller school such as Houston's Case Keenum or Tony Pike from the University of Cincinnati? Maybe for the first time in four years a running back will take the prize, with top performers Jahvid Best of Cal and Ryan Matthews of Fresno State knocking on the doorstep. It would also be easy to argue a case for Tate Forcier of Michigan, though a true freshman has never won, an undefeated season would certainly put him in the running.

I guess the only way to be certain is to let the season play out and see who puts up and who shuts up for the remainder of the year. Then we will know which three players have earned a trip to New York to accept the trophy that goes to collegiate football's best player.

Upset?

You hate it or love it, it's known as the upset. The underdog shocks the world as David takes down Goliath. The thing I have trouble understanding is why an upset should ever happen. I know that games aren't played on paper but realistically if a team is favored by enough, then they should never lose.

The upset should never happen. A team gets one week to prepare for a team, no matter how big of a game it is, a team should never be looked past. Looking past the smaller team is a great way to get beat. It simply should never happen and when it does, the underdog never gets the credit for out hustling and wanting the game more. It's always that the favored team lost the game, instead of getting beaten.

I also believe that the term upset is used out of context many times in sports. An upset is when a team, that is vastly over matched defeats a team that is superior. This season, teams that have been "upset" haven't been defeated by bad opposition. This weekend, PSU was defeated by an undefeated Iowa squad. While in the state of Florida, the Bulls of South Florida continued an undefeated run by dismissing the Seminoles in Tallahassee.

A legitimate upset this season has been the Washington Huskies taking down the then #3 USC. So in reality, upsets occur less than ESPN makes it seem. So don't be too upset if the team you cheer for gets beat by a team that isn't ranked, it's not necessarily an upset and it's certainly not the end of the world.

It's all in the atmosphere

Fall is in the air and that can only mean one thing, football has arrived and the baseball playoffs are starting to round into form. There is no time better, the weather is cool and comfortable and sports fans know what is about to transform as the year goes on.

My first taste of ESPN College Gameday came today and even though it wasn't the real deal gameday, I could sense the electricity in the air and realized that on Saturday's everywhere across these fantastic United States felt the same way.

The bottom line is that I have yet to meet a person who has a bad time at a tailgate of any kind and I bet that I would be hard pressed to find one. This is what makes the fall season in this country the greatest time of year.

The sequence of baseball playoffs blending into the heart of college football season, then combining with the holidays of Thanksgiving, Hunting Season, and Christmas is by far the best time of the year. So be sure to enjoy the 2009 addition of it all!

Chip Kelly

After Oregon's heart breaking season opener to the Broncos of Boise State, emotions were running high. So high that one disgruntled Oregon fan that had traveled all the way to Boise, wanted his money back.

Chip Kelly obliged to the email he received and promptly sent a check for $439 to Tony Seminary for the travel expenses.

This act is seemingly unheard of in the world today. Perhaps it was the embarrassment that the Oregon program received when LaGarrette Blount promptly cold cocked a Boise State player after the game.

College football fans probably shouldn't get too comfortable with this action though as it doesn't seem as though it will happen again anytime soon. Coaches simply don't care enough about what a single person thinks or says to send them a refund check.

Hats of to you though Mr. Kelly, there aren't many out there that would have done the same.

Milton Bradley

Not sure if everyone has heard this story about Major League Baseball outfielder Milton Bradley or not but it is ridiculous.

Bradley was recently quoted as saying "It's no wonder that they haven't won in a hundred years." Referencing the Cubs World Series drought. The Cubs management promptly suspended Bradley for the remainder of the season. The Cubs are Bradley's 8th different team and he has had issues at all of his other stops.

Now little Milton has to have his mother come out and save face for her child. "Milton eats, sleeps, and drinks baseball, that's all he wants to do." Bradley's mother is quoted as saying to the Chicago Sun Times. Perhaps if her son should come out and apologize for what he said about the Cubs fans being a terrible fan base, instead of having his mommy come out and try to get her son his job back.

Milton has two years remaining on his three year, 30 million dollar contract. Perhaps if he would hit higher than .257 the fans wouldn't treat him so poorly.
